Fort Lauderdale Suicide, Death – The Florida law enforcement community is mourning the loss of Elizabeth Ortega, a longtime emergency communications professional whose life was tragically cut short in a domestic violence incident in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Her passing has left family members, friends, coworkers, and first responders across the state grieving the loss of a dedicated public servant remembered for her compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to helping others.

According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, officers responded to a residence on August 1 in the 2000 block of Southeast Oxmoor Drive after reports of a shooting. Investigators determined that Elizabeth Ortega, 50, sustained multiple gunshot wounds during what authorities believe was a domestic violence incident involving her longtime partner, Ralph Varela Sr., 50.

Police said Ortega attempted to flee the residence after the shooting began. Despite emergency medical efforts and being transported to a hospital, she later died from her injuries. Authorities reported that Varela Sr. was subsequently found deceased inside the home from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation remains ongoing.

Elizabeth’s death has been deeply felt within the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), where she served as a respected member of the Emergency Communications Division. According to the agency, she began her career with the Greenacres Police Department in November 2001 before joining PBSO following the 2016 communications merger.

In a statement honoring her life and service, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office remembered Elizabeth as a valued colleague whose kindness and compassion made a lasting impact on everyone around her.

The agency described her as a respected and cherished member of the PBSO family, noting that her warm smile, dedication, and professionalism positively influenced both coworkers and the countless residents she assisted throughout her career. Her commitment to serving others extended beyond her professional responsibilities, and she earned the admiration of colleagues for both her work ethic and her genuine care for those around her.

Her passing has also deeply affected her family.
